A good friend of mine died in 2014. He passed away in the Inpatient Hospice wing of Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. I was there 10 minutes before he died. While walking around the the ward on the Saturday afternoon that he died, I noticed that there was no one else visiting patients. Dying people were dying alone. A few weeks later, my friend Carrie Ahern and I were hanging out and she mentioned that she had started to volunteer for hospice up in the Bronx. Something bubbled up inside me and finally came together. I began volunteering to sit with dying people in their homes. This turn of events led me to question what the hell life is really all about. What are the permanent fixtures that we fasten to? What is just momentary madness that we get caught up in? What is binds us together? What breaks us apart?

Per Schumann visited NYC from Hamburg and we went to dinner. After the
meal we dug into the big questions we had been grappling with. We both
wanted to create something that didn’t age, but would remain relevant as
long as people were relevant. We created a list of questions to use as
guideposts for getting to know the true spirit of a person, at least as
close as we can get.
Friends, loved ones, acquaintances, strangers - everyone.
We took these questions out into the world and asked them.
