Using the conflicting languages of teenage love and small stakes capitalism, “I’ll Raise You One…” is a strip poker game performed in the public realm. Throwell’s performance brings audiences to the threshold of titillation again and again while discussing a much deeper issue underneath. At the end of each round, when the participants typically exit and private affairs begin, players begin again using a different economic model. “I’ll Raise You One…” establishes a world where economics actually have concrete meaning to participants. While big numbers get abstract and inertia keeps the status quo in place most of time, this project asks performers to put something real at risk, the fear of being nude in public, so that these central economic issues take on an urgency that is truly what the issue deserves.
